All Aboard!

The Delta Heritage Museum in Atlanta has recently published an online gallery of the flight attendants' uniforms since 1940.

Looking at the full gallery, it's easy to see that the colorful outfits have now been replaced by plain, monochromatic uniforms. Not surprisingly, the flight experience has also become a little less... exciting.

You can see the whole gallery, with stories, at www.deltamuseum.org.

Weekend Suggestion: Cormac McCarthy

Like a good wine, it's better with age. That saying can describe many things, including music and art. It can also sometimes describe artists or athletes that defy time and have their better years long after their 20s, 30s and 40s.

Cormac McCarthy definitely fits that description. After writing five books between 1965 and 1985, McCarthy received widespread recognition with his 1992 book All The Pretty Horses, first book of the excellent Border Trilogy. That was followed by No Country For Old Men (adapted to the screen by the Coen brothers, and winner of the 2007 Best Picture at the Academy Awards) and The Road, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Rain and cold is the forecast for the weekend, making it the perfect time to grab a good book and a hot chocolate, and spend a few hours reading in front of the fireplace.

H&M, the Green Redux

If I mention PET bottles and textile waste, the first thing that might come to mind is a landfill with birds flying over. Or chemical spills in a polluted river.

Well, Swedish giant H&M has recycled both, added organic materials for good measure, mixed everything in their design HQ, and VOILÀ!, the new fully-sustainable, eco-friendly Spring Summer 2010 Garden Collection.

Far from looking like something taken from a landfill, these skirts, dresses and tops look fresh and stylish. 80 clothing items and 10 accessories - everything you need to update up your summer closet!

March Madness

À la française!

France, the eternal romantic. So it's not suprising that after Tamara and Nicolas (Tila) met in March over half a decade ago, the name of the company sprung from their encounter.

Tila March saw the day only four years ago, but it has already become a worldwide success. Boutiques are selling its bags and shoes all over the United States, Japan and Europe. Its already a favorite of fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle, L'Officiel, Madame and Lucky.

Check out their Spring Summer 2010 collection at www.tilamarch.com. Favorite combination: the Marine Wedge Strap & Buckle with the Marine Zelig Tote Bag. Anything you fancy?

Take A Yike!

Spring is (finally) here, the snow is gone, it's time to take out the bikes. Many commuters use their bike to get to work in the morning - but wouldn't it be nice to not be all sweaty when getting at the workplace? The Yike Bike from New Zealand might be your answer!

This electric bike / Big Wheel is mostly made of resistant and super-light carbon composite, it can be folded and weighs only 21 pounds, and it can go up to 10km on a single charge.

The biggest issue? The price. Tagged at 3,500 Euros, that's almost 5,000 Canadian dollars! Still, as we strive to become greener, it'll be interesting what other transportation alternatives to will developed in the upcoming years

Check out yikebike.com for all the details.

Weekend Suggestion: Delphic

Once in a while, there's an album you listen to and wonder: What exactly is that kind of music? Under what label would that record or artist fall under. Some tracks are electronic-ish, some are more rock-ish, some of more 80s-pop-ish, and most are a mix of everything. It could be labeled as alternative, but for me, that brings up images of 90s alternative, with Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots.

So the best way to describe Delphic's music is to unlabel it. It's just good music.

The closest comparaisons I can think of would be Bloc Party, but more electronic, and The Rapture, but with heavier guitars, and Underworld, but less ravey... if that really helps!

The four piece band out of Marple Bridge, UK has been hailed as one of the Sounds of 2010 by the BBC. Produced by programmer-remixer-extraordinaire Ewan Pearson, they released a few singles in 2009, before coming out with their debut full-length album, Acolyte, in January 2010. NME states that the album is 'the first great debut of 2010' and The Times champions the band for their 'youthful hunger underwritten by an assurance and craft almost unheard of in debut albums.' All in all, the perfect sound to disconnect during the weekend.

Great video for their single This Momentary

Designer Spotlight: Proenza Schouler

I've just recently discovered this duo out of New York. Products of the presitgious Parsons School of Design, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough have been darlings of the American design world ever since their debut in 2002.

A favorite of Chloë Sevigny, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Karolina Kurkova, Proenza Schouler relies on dark neutral colors and sleek cuts for its sporty chic metropolitain looks. This year's collection sees a lot of layering, sporty jackets, and short-yet-comfortable skirts and dresses.

Trashy, but still Classy

In this era of reduce-reuse-recyle, design agency ICrave has taken that motto to new commercial heights - welcome to the new NYC restaurant / lounge The Collective.

The owner approached the agency and wanted a design something fresh but inexpensive (don't we all!). The agency scavenged items from junk yards, flea markets, and discarded packing materials, and then hired artists, plumbers, carpenters through websites like Etsy and Craiglist. The result: a hybrid between a junkyard and a kid's vivid imagination, where you can enjoy contemporary American cuisine wth a nice glass of wine.

The Collective is opening on March 17 - visit their (not completely done) website for all the info, or even better, drop by and grab a bite - 1 Little West 12th Street, in the Meat Packing District of Manhattan.

Under My Umbrella

Lots of rain in the Ottawa valley over the weekend... which made me realize that I don't have an umbrella for the Spring season!

Out of rainy Seattle, pare*umbrella has over thirty fun and colorful umbrellas to spruce up those cold, gray March days. All their umbrellas are produced in limited editions, and each season comes a new selection of fabrics and styles to choose from.

As mentioned on their website:

A cheerful, lovely umbrella on a gray rainy day can have a contagious effect on those around you. Wouldn't it be nice to have everyone around you enjoying the rain as much as you?

Don't know if a nice umbrella will make me enjoy rain... but check out their website at www.pareumbrella.com.

Weekend Suggestion: Ladyhawke

A good friend has just returned from a month-long trip to New Zealand, so it's the perfect occasion to put the spotlight on a musician from Down Under, Ladyhawke.

Born in the Wellington region, Phillipa Brown is highly influenced by the 80s, whether for her music or her fashion style. After playing in grunge and punk bands at the beginning of the 2000s, she started her solo career under the moniker Ladyhawke, from the 1985 film featuring Michelle Pfeiffer.

Her eponymous debut album, released in 2008, has been a indie pop/rock success, being certified gold in the UK and Autralia, and platinum in New Zealand. She scored two top-50s on the UK Singles Chart with Paris Is Burning and My Delirium. AllMusic gave the album four out of five starts, mentioning that 'despite its blatant retro vibe, it still manages to sound fresh thanks to its clever production and Brown's fiery and vibrant vocals.'

Weekend Suggestion: Big Bad Gorillaz

Back in a virtual space near you, Gorillaz is ready to once again take over the music world.

Brainchild of Blur's ex-frontman Damon Albarn and Tank Girl co-creator Jamie Hewlett, 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel have been around since 1998. Combining hip hop, dub, alternative rock and electronic sounds, the band has sold over 15 million albums worldwide, on the strength of singles like Clint Eastwood, Feel Good Inc. and DARE.

They're also the champions of collaborations; over the years, Albarn & Co. have recorded songs with De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Lou Reed and Dennis Hopper, just to name a few.

Their latest offering, Plastic Beach, will be release this side of the Atlantic on March 9th. Reviews for the album have been very positive - the BBC notes that Plastic Beach is 'not just one of the best records of 2010, but a release to stand alongside the greatest Albarn’s ever been involved with and a new benchmark for collaborative music as a whole.', while Q magazine gave it five stars out of five for 'some of the most forward-thinking pop you'll hear this or any year.'

Check out their video for the Plastic Jungle's first single, Stylo feat. Bobby Womack and Mos Def.
